Two men caught trying to steal downed street light pole.
The thieves had already cut up the aluminum pole and had the pieces in the bed of their pickup truck when they were arrested at the scene. The state Department of Transportation said the light pole was previously knocked down in a car crash and was sitting on the side of the road until crews could return to the scene and make repairs.
DOT spokesperson said that the pole weighed 150 lbs. He says if the suspects wanted to re-sell the aluminum, they would have received about $70.

I saw this on Facebook. I can't believe they tried to steal A LIGHT POLE. Bananas.
A light pole? Really? Then again, haven't they been trying to steal copper wire in the light poles also? Crazy people! Or desperate!
Ann- You have just got to be kidding!(on Facebook!) One mo thing for mainland people think hawaii people are stupid .... albeit, here it's true. Somebody happened to drive by and reported them. Also, the state/city said that their road department was planning to pickup the downed pole but like yea when, 5 years from now.
Kay- because of the copper thieves, a large portion under the airport viaduct is still dark. You otta try driving under there when you get back. With copper at least there's a lot of money in it. Aluminum .... I don't know if it's worth it. Btw, recently there was a copper thief who was electrocuted.

Actually they were helping clean up the neighborhood of trash and garbage - keeping the aina clean!
Just like picking up aluminum cans!
Anonymous- actually, the state wouldn't have retrieved the light pole for another 70-years. Too much work, er, let the other crew do it. Think about it, why didn't they haul away the old light pole when they installed the replacement light pole since they had a large enough truck with them then and there. Somebody crashed into the old light pole.
Hey Ron... just wanted to answer your question about the deck thing.
I wrote the reply on my blog, but I wanted to make sure you got it.
"It is free-standing with a whole lot of legs sitting in cement around the outside perimeter and on the inside. Art set the legs deep into the ground. There's a rule about that on the mainland because of the ground freezing. An inspector came out and checked the leg supports before Art could continue. I remember Art saying the deck was not going to move at all once he put it in."
Kay- thanks for the reply. My thinking was that it's problematic digging deep footings adjacent to the house's foundation and I suppose attaching (interfacing) the deck framing through a ledger board on the main house is easier albeit rife with its own nuances especially with a low deck. We don't have soil heaving with Hawaii temperatures so foundations overall have a simpler design. Nice work by Art and undoubtedly neighbors had nice comments on the finished product without a clue how much work went into spacing the posts and joists, etc, and nailing the various parts together.
Copper theft is why there are lots of unlit places in the Philippines too.
There's something that beats this though. Last week, it was discovered that a 100k USD steel bridge had been dismantled and stolen in Pennsylvania.

Brad- I watched the video at the link provided and it sure doesn't make sense at all. Perhaps it had sentimental value to somebody.
Maybe. The cops will just have to search around until they see a bridge in someone's back yard.
