The voter turnout for Saturday's election for the Waikiki/Ala Moana precinct was an astounding total of 2900 votes. No, I didn't leave out a zero. It's not a presidential voting year and you might expect a lower turnout but not as low as it was for my neck of the woods. 2900 votes.
Know all the hoola the Republicans are making about the injustice of letting the Bush tax cuts expire for the rich. I doubt that any readers to this site make $250,000 or more a year, so it won't affect you the way it'll affect the people who live, well, who live differently than you and me. The Bush tax cuts was suppose to be only a temporary reprieve, and I'd be remiss not to mention, passing a tax cut while the nation was supposedly at war is not the best example of fiscal responsibility. The Republicans are characterizing the expiration of the tax cuts as a tax increase targeting the rich. Well, yeah, you'd pay more federal taxes without the tax break, but that's not really the same thing as "increasing" your tax, is it? At any rate, whom do you suppose decreed that the tax cuts would expire at the end of 2010? Why it was Bush.
Mayor of Honolulu race. Again somebody who didn't grow up in Hawaii is the mayor. There wouldn't be that much wrong with this except for the fact the last local person mayor, before Hannemann, was like a gazillion years ago. Honolulu does not elect a local person as their mayor. Only malahini's need apply.
Hawaii Five-O. Two koreans on the Five-O crack squad. What the rationale for this casting in this genre remains beyond me. (Whoops, gigi.) I didn't stop by to see the last week's Premier on the beach just two blocks away from where I live, and last night I forgot all about the Hawaii Five-O debut night on the tv.

Great post, especially about the tax cuts for the rich expiring. It's all so crazy.
It boggles my mind that people are so down on Obama right now. He got a form of Health Care passed. It might not have been perfect, but it was something. He got the troops out of Iraq like he promised. He's trying to fix the economy, but he's one man with a whole lot of Republicans trying to stop him at every corner.
Did people really think everything would be fixed in 1 year?

Kay- Obama is not king. His programs have to be approved by the Congress. The Republicans voted as a group against Obama. Meanwhile the Democrats stumbled all over themselves, and a few aspired to be the 60th swing vote .... for a price. All that Obama has left is Hawaii people. Whereas, Bush was essentially a monarch. Congress approved almost all his programs. He had like what 2 vetos in a 6 year period.
