Mission Improbable

Was it....if the US withdraws it's military forces out of Afghanistan, the Taliban would soon overrun the country, and after having done so, they would invite al Queda back into Afghanistan where al Queda would plot and hatch new terrorist attacks against the US. The strategy rests upon a flimsy premise that a victorious Taliban would indeed invite al Queda back into Afghanistan. Obama has decreed Karzai 18-months to get his ass in gear. Otherwise. Otherwise, what? If Afghanistan isn't capable of or flat out refuses to beef up it's military to a level mighty enough to withstand a Taliban takeover by end of the 18-months deadline, the US is still faced with the same doomsday scenario of a Taliban takeover in the aftermath of a US pullout. All in all, Karzai could simply call Obama's bluff. The US is trying to eradicate the Taliban in the interest of our own national security, not Afghanistan's, thus, as long as there's a maglignant Taliban in Afghanistan, the US is tied and bound in the quagmire. On the other hand, Obama's ace in the hole is that Karzai doesn't give a hoot about the Afghani people, either. Paramount to Karzai is his day to day ability to survive and remain in power. In the wake of a hypothetical US pullout, Karzai won't last a year, unless, of course he joins the Taliban for diplomatic reasons. The other option, arguably, is that the US signs a treaty with the Taliban agreeing that the US will refrain from interfering in Afghanistan's internal affairs in consideration that the Taliban never ever welcomes back al Queda.

Or there's the other option. We just leave. If al Qaeda comes back we simply nuke the entire country. That would set a clear example to others to ensure they don't wind up in the same predicament. No one wants to rule a sheet of radioactive glass.

Brad- between you and me, I have no idea why we're not attacking al Queda in Pakistan. I don't give an iff about sovereignty issues. Perhaps there are covert missions. I dunno.

There's no oil in Pakistan is there?

Brad- there's no oil in Pakistan, but there's al Queda. Brad, why in tarnation have we been fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan for the pass 8-years?? Their not the enemy. After al Queda escaped to Pakistan, there's no al Queda in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan was just a warm-up to get the US public used to the idea of being at war with a Middle Eastern country. Once the bearings were greased they sent us to war with Iraq. Explain the sense of that one to me. WTF did Iraq have to do with anything? Anything at all? They weren't dealing with al Qaeda, al Queso or even al Enchilada Grande. But, there was lots of oil there. I think whatever plan was in motion somehow fell through and instead of securing an oil interest for the big businesses that run our government, everything went to hell. Then they let a black guy win so everyone would shift focus to hating him and want a white Republican back in office that ....

Let me stop rambling about conspiracy theories...

Brad- the tab hasn't arrived in the mail yet for the US waging the illegal and misbegotten Iraqi War. I bet there isn't a nation on the planet that its people doesn't wish the US ill, economy and everthing between, go south.
